In the development of economical and low-emission combustion engines, the dynamic behaviour of the valve train plays a crucial role. It is particularly important that the movements of the valve are constrained within pre-calculated limits over the whole range of engine speed. The numerical simulation of the valve train, and the optimisation of the valve spring, have proved to be influential factors with regard to improvements in the design and development time. The aim of our project is to develop a software tool that describes all of the pertinent dynamic features of the valve, and which has been verified through experimental observations. This project is beeing carried out in cooperation with a local automotive component manufacturer. In terms of analysis, the problem is highly non-linear because of the effect of the physical contact between valve spring windings, and therefore demands complex mathematical solution methods.
